The Joy of Sorrow and the Sorrow of Joy

“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.”

—Kahlil Gibran

I keep this small black book by my desk. It was my father’s. It is called “The Prophet” and was written by Kahlil Gibran. The book begins with a prophet who is about to leave a village and set sail for other lands. The villagers seek his wisdom before he departs. A woman, a ploughman, a mason, an old man, a rich man, a judge, a weaver, a youth, an astronomer, and more—they all have questions for him to address before he leaves them. Below is one episode especially pertinent to our time.
