THE CONVERSATION:
In contemplating God, the great creator of the universe, we may imagine His resulting creation as a vast collection of neat, pre-designed packages. Yet, if we look at the biological human as an example of this grand design, we find a final product that seems more like a jumbled collage. Our bodies are made up of what appear to be tacked-on strands of DNA, ancient microbes repurposed into energy powerhouses for our cells, and a vast community of modern-day microbes populating our surfaces. Our bodies are a hodgepodge, formed over deep evolutionary time.
What if we opened ourselves to the possibility that God’s creativity sometimes looks like messy improvisation? And if we are to become like God, what does this mean for our own attempts to live a godly life? Each of us is shaped by limitations and endowed with gifts. Like Hannah, who has struggled for years with autoimmune disease, some of us find it hard to serve others with lasagnas and snow shovels. Others are limited by time, finances, or know-how. Given this, what does it look like to live into creative grace? What gifts can we draw upon? What resources can we piece together to live in “gracing”—that collaborative, creative partnership with God in the here and now?
ABOUT HANNAH:
Hannah Packard Crowther is the author of Gracing, Faith Matters’ newest publication. She has an MS degree in Biological Science Education from Brigham Young University and a twenty-plus year vocation as a full-time mom. As a reluctant student of autoimmune illness, she’s wrestled with how to live with grace in a broken body. With deep Latter-day Saint roots, she seeks truth, beauty, and wisdom wherever they can be found. She has aspirations to become an amateur theologian, a poet, or a beachcomber. Maybe all three.
