What Do We Misunderstand About the Media?

Holly Richardson

FRI, OCTOBER 4, 2024   |  7:30-9:00 pm MDT

Understanding the role of media in our lives is critical—for both the good and ill it does. Holly will share essential skills of inquiry to help us discern between the two.

WHERE:

Home of Ed and Kristen Iversen
3582 Oak Rim Way
Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Thanks to Kristen and Ed for hosting this gathering in their home.

Or join us via the large Zoom link below in blue. But the experience is better in person so come join us!

THE CONVERSATION:

Explore our misconceptions then dive into key concepts:

  • All media messages are constructed.
  • Media messages are produced for particular purposes
  • Media messages are constructed using a creative language with its own rules, as each medium has different characteristics, strengths and language
  • Different people experience the same media message differently and use their individual skills, beliefs and experiences to construct their own meanings from media messages.
  • Media have embedded values and points of view.
  • Media and media messages can influence beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, and the democratic process.

Continuum of news and of reporters

  • SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists, code of ethics)
  • Reporter to opinion writer
  • fact-checking
  • Media bias charts
  • “Unbiased” news stories to misinformation to disinformation

Why does it matter and what can we do?

ABOUT HOLLY:

Holly Richardson is the editor of Utah Policy and a weekly columnist for the Deseret News. A former Utah legislator, she holds a master’s degree in professional communication and a Ph.D. in political science. She was a weekly columnist for the Salt Lake Tribune for four years. She served on the State Records Committee for eight years, and on multiple boards, including Hope Humanitarian, a nonprofit focused on international refugee work and Real Women Run, where she served as chair.

In addition to politics, Dr. Richardson has written on peace building, conflict resolution, refugees, faith, family and more. She and her husband, Greg, are the parents of a large and unique family.

If you really want to get a good sense of who Holly is I found this great short video about her views on important issues.

Thanks to Tim and Aubrey Chavez and the Faith Matters Foundation for providing the Zoom connection. Scroll down the page for the link to connect virtually. Below that link are some helpful tips for being part of a Zoom convo.

To get email notifications of upcoming conversations go to the bottom of this site’s home page or text or call me at 801-695-5036.

I’m delighted those who can’t attend in person can join virtually. I’m sorry I can’t give you the same care and attention given to those in person. Please contact me if you have suggestions for improvement.

  • Click on the Zoom link above for either last month’s recorded conversation (if the event date has passed) or the live conversation now. If you are participating in the live conversation keep reading.
  • When you are connected you will either be waiting in a lobby and will let be in shortly or you will immediately be able to see other participants. Please make sure that you are muted and that your video is on if you choose to have it on. (Love to see and hear you live, but we’ll take curious lurkers also.)
  • If you can’t hear the host, me, or others, find your settings and make sure you have a working microphone and speaker selected. OR maybe the problem is on my end so please let me know if it is.

ZOOM ETIQUETTE:

  • Please mute your microphone before entering and when you are not speaking so noises are not heard by everyone else.
  • If you are going to multitask—not recommended—or wander around a lot, please turn off your video and make sure you are muted. No one wants to be distracted by you eating or using the loo.
